With the ever growing popularity of TV shows like Fixer Upper and Flea Market Flip and the many bloggers on Pinterest, home decor and interior design have never been more popular. Whether it’s your sister who is dishing about her latest Chalk Paint project or your girlfriend who is debating on whether or not to install a glass subway tile backsplash, it may seem like everyone you know has gotten bit by the decorating bug in one way or another. But for those who were not blessed with an eye for design, it may feel impossible to keep up. You might find yourself asking “How do I know what color to paint my bedroom?” or “There are so many flooring choices how do I know what to choose?”. No matter how overwhelmed you may feel, don’t give up! We’ve got 5 tips for decorating when you don’t know what you like.
1.Figure out what you like: If you are someone who feels like you can’t decorate because you don’t have an eye for design or don’t know what you’re own personal style is you’re WRONG! Everyone has things that they like and don’t like. The best way to figure out what you like is to browse for inspiration. Websites like Pinterest or Houzz are great resources because you can scroll through hundreds of different room ideas all on one page. Save 4-5 of your favorite images and take note of what they all have in common. From there you will have a solid idea for what elements you like and don’t like.
2. Start Small: The thought of redecorating your entire house may feel so overwhelming and stressful that you might forever shy away from beginning the project. So instead of jumping in with both feet start small. It can be as basic as a styling a bookshelf or a table, purchasing new bedding, or finally painting one room to be an easy (and inexpensive) launching point.
3. Decorate without Fear: It’s ok to take a risk and experiment, that’s how you find out what you really like. Everyone has a design fail from time to time, it’s part of the creative process. But it’s important to know when to experiment and when to play it safe. It’s much easier to correct a design mistake with inexpensive decor items or paint rather than ripping out and installing new flooring, countertops, or a backsplash if you decide you’ve changed your mind.
4. Stop Comparing Yourself: If you read enough DIY design blogs or watch enough HGTV it’s easy to get disillusioned and think that home renovation is easy, fast, and turns out perfect every time. Truth is, it’s NOT! You have no idea what went into creating that perfectly staged photo or how much practice that designer has had to come up with their ideas. Trust your process and stop comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle or end.
5. Don’t Rush the Process: No matter how much pressure you feel to get your renovation done, DON’T RUSH! Rushing is a formula for mistakes. Take your time to really sit with your ideas and make sure they are what you really want especially when purchasing expensive finishes like flooring or counter tops.
